Spend a Semester Abroad in Germany
Bard College students spend one semester (typically the Spring semester of the Junior year) at Humboldt University, Berlin, taking courses in the academic area(s) that best fit or complement their major, including German, literature, music, history, philosophy, cultural studies, etc. Before the start of the semester, which runs from early April to mid-July, students participate in an intensive one-month language course at Humboldt University.

Bard College students may also spend one semester at Bard College Berlin (BCB). BCB, students from more than 60 countries and a select international faculty work together in small classes and tutorials that encourage thoughtful dialogue. The language of instruction is English. Courses in economics, art, and history take advantage of BCB’s location in one of the world’s most artistically vibrant and historically layered cities. BCB is an active participant in local and international initiatives to provide access to higher education for displaced students, including Syrian and other refugees in Berlin.

Tuition Exchange

The Tuition Exchange Program allows students to apply through Bard to enroll directly as an exchange student in our German partner university, the Humboldt University, Berlin. Students participating in Tuition Exchanges pay their regular Bard tuition (with their financial aid package in effect) but are responsible for paying room, board, and fees to the partner university/program. Studying via Tuition Exchange has numerous benefits including access to a large number and variety of courses and academic programs, the possibility of joining clubs and other activities offered by the partner institutions, and access to campus support systems and offices including student deans, security, and health and counseling services.

Requirements and Course Work

  • Pre-Trip Requirements
Regardless of program, all Bard students must gain approval for their plans by submitting a Petition for Study Abroad approved by their academic advisor. For more information about this process, please visit: bard.edu/bardabroad/bard-students/.

Bard students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and must have successfully moderated in order to be eligible to study abroad (usually during the junior year). The only exception to that rule is the Begin in Berlin program for first-year students (who may apply to study at Bard College Berlin for their first academic year).
  • Course Catalogue

Allgemeines Vorlesungsverzeichnis (General course catalog(s) available only for a few weeks at the beginning of each semester). There is a more detailed annotated course catalog (kommentiertes Vorlesungsverzeichnis) of the faculties, departments, and institutes. The details include information on the content, requirements, and aims of the lectures and classes offered. They seem to be of particular significance for prospective students of Humboldt-Universität and are, therefore, strongly recommended.

Bard Abroad

Under Bard, the Bard College Berlin curriculum has expanded to include the Arts and Society Program, Liberal Arts Berlin, and Begin in Berlin study abroad programs, as well as summer intensives in theater and studio arts. A German language intensive is held during the January intersession. The college is an active participant in local and international initiatives to provide access to higher education for displaced students, including Syrian and other refugees in Berlin. Flexible programs allow for visiting students to study at BCB for a semester, a year, or more. Students may also participate in internships in a variety of fields.
